 PREFACE TO RIRDC's RESEARCH-IN-PROGRESS 1997-1998

The Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) covers a diverse range of areas from:

Prospective New Industries such as:

RIRDC also fosters research and development in Future Agricultural Systems such as:
global competitiveness, resilient agricultural systems and human capital, communications and information systems.

This wide range of research and development created its own management complexities and therefore, in my view, it became very important that we have an annual stocktake of each our projects, the results of which are made widely available.

This year we have produced a "Research-in-Progress, June 1998" which covers all our continuing projects, or those that were completed in 1997-1998. The information on each project is only a short summary – an initial briefing – and we would encourage people interested in the Project to make contact directly with the Research Provider.

I would like to thank all the Research Providers for the information which has been supplied. In some cases, the material was worked up jointly with the Researchers and the Corporation’s Program Managers.

While every effort has been made, the Corporation is unable to take responsibility for the accuracy of the information supplied by the contractors.

This year the ‘Research-in-Progress" is being published electronically on the Net. Subject to demand, the particular parts dealing with specific programs will be hardcopy published. This decision will be made by the respective Program Managers.

I hope this edition of ‘Research-in-Progress’ is a useful roadmap to RIRDC operations. Let us know if you can see ways of improving it.
Yours sincerely,

Peter Core
Managing Director
