Agrigate is a searchable directory of agriculture sites for Australian researchers.

The contents of the Agrigate site can be search using keywords. It can also be browsed by selecting a broad term of reference, then cross-referencing it against one or many specific terms. Or the contents of the site can be indexed and browsed alphabetically.

The site highlights new entries to the site through the 'What's New' section and gives some general information about Agrigate, its policies and how to use the site. Subscriptions are also available for receiving update information.

The site consists of a number of categories including classifieds, community, cropping, education, rural products, finance, have your say, health, industry groups, kids, leisure, livestock, markets, news, rural services, real estate, shopping, weather and women.

Some areas of the site are better developed and more functional than others. For instance, the "news" service has been running for some time, while the "having your say" area has not yet come online. Many of the other categories offer some form of functionality somewhere in between these two, offering a combination of links to other web sources and the sites own news stories.

Infarmation

Infarmation offers a searchable directory of agricultural web sites. A sentence describes each site.

The site also provides a number of other services, including a diary of rural events, Web design and hosting services, a discussion forum entitled "Bush Telegraph", some current news and weather information, and some commodity pricing information.

The Infarmation site can be personally customised by visitors choosing to become ‘Infarmembers’.

This virtual library aims to provide information on various topics that relate to Australian and New Zealand farming industries. There is also a Rural Links area offering further resources in the categories of Rural Society, Agriculture, Rural Environment and Technology.

"Search and research" provides a series of search interfaces into other agricultural information, news, weather, economic information, a calendar of agricultural conferences etc, conversion calculators, and "training" for new Internet users. "Markets and analysis" links to actual price information within the commodity exchange sites, including a "QuickQuotes" section on daily market reports, and global weather and crop conditions. "News and articles" provides a range of links on subjects such as news, and issues such as risk management and supply chain relationships.

Agriculture Network Information Centre (AgNIC)

The Agriculture Network Information Centre (AgNIC) is a voluntary alliance of the National Agricultural Library (NAL), land-grant universities and other agricultural organisations, in cooperation with citizen groups and US government agencies. AgNIC focuses on providing agricultural information in electronic format via the Internet. One of the objectives of AgNIC is that member participants take responsibility for small vertical segments of agricultural information (including basic, applied, and developmental research, extension, and teaching activities in the food, agricultural, renewable natural resources, forestry, and physical and social sciences) and develop Web sites and reference services in specific subject areas.

The AgNIC site can be browsed by approx 15 subject areas or searched via keyword searches. Both simple and advanced searches are possible while search tips and a thesaurus are also available. While this site is predominantly US-centric, some references to Australian agriculture are available.

Agriscape

Agriscape is a web page directory which also incorporates a basic search engine. Its extensive categorised database is dominated by U.S. websites due to its origin from that country. There are however, many international links sourced from Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The page is updated regularly, and the previous day's updates can be viewed by clicking on the 'What's New' hypertext.

The array of categories located on the home page include weather, auctions, education and research, libraries, journals, conferences, and market reports (in $US). Clicking on any of the categories will take the user to topics directly related to that category, and also subcategories which in themselves contain more links. For anyone intending to travel abroad, the conference section would prove quite useful if they wish to gain an insight on agricultural issues while travelling. The weather link is almost internationally exhaustive, and contains links to many useful weather-related sites.

Agrisurf!

AgriSurf contains one of the largest specialist directories of agricultural sites on the Internet. The ‘hand picked’ directory of web resources is searchable by free text language or by Boolean terms. Alternatively, there is an agricultural index, which is browsable via 34 subject headings.

Entries include a brief description of each site, and a rating for accessibility (but not content). Special pages are provided for new entries and for “fertile" (ie, featured) sites. An email newsletter on developments in agricultural web sites is available and a number of discussion forums are provided. There is also daily agricultural news, an ‘AgDownloads’ area, a ‘Top 10’ and an ‘AgCalendar’ where you can browse or add events.

Ag Biz Wire allows companies visiting the site to submit press releases to AgriSurf to increase their public circulation, and site visitors can create their own custom bookmarks for the site.

Agriweb Canada is a directory of online resources in Canadian agriculture and its associated agri-food industries. The sites resources can be searched via a keyword search, referenced through a "Dewey Tree", or by browsing an alphabetical index of subject or author. Searches can also be refined by geographical area.

The site is aimed primarily at Canadian audiences, but does include some international news, including from Australia.
