Recognising Australia’s rural women on International Women’s Day
Published: 09-Mar-10
The RIRDC Rural Women’s Award supports leadership on International Women’s Day.
For nearly 100 years, International Women’s Day has celebrated the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.
The RIRDC Rural Women’s Award also celebrates the achievements of rural women. For more than ten years, the award has recognised women’s contribution to primary industries, but more importantly, encouraged their greater leadership and capacity to contribute to primary industries and rural Australia.
“On this day, RIRDC congratulates the recently announced state winners of the RIRDC Rural Women’s Award,” said Dr Peter O’Brien, Managing Director of RIRDC.
“The quality of this year’s applicants demonstrates the enormous contribution women are making to rural Australia.”
“This year’s state winners include a native flower grower, a farmer with a passion for helping other farming families cope with drought, a pioneer in biological and organic farming, and a farmer committed to the production of biogas as a source of electricity.”
The State winners already announced are:
Lana Mitchell (New South Wales)
Lana is committed to supporting the Australian wildflower industry to move beyond an emerging industry and into mainstream use for florists and consumers.
Gabrielle Bresnehan (Tasmania)
Gabrielle’s ambition is to continue supporting farming families in need, to help them become more resilient and better able to cope with the challenges of drought, isolation and depression.
Sue Middleton (Western Australia)
Sue would like to use her award to continue pursing bio-waste as a source of electricity and as a key emission trading and environmental marketing tool.
Ulli Spranz (South Australia)
Ulli’s passion is to educate others in biodynamic and organic farming principles both here in Australia and internationally.
The winners of the RIRDC Rural Women’s Award for Queensland and Victoria will be announced this week. The national award will be presented at a ceremony on 25 May 2010 at Parliament House in Canberra.
