The Farming and Fishing Health and Safety Program is collaborative partnership between the Rural Industries, Grains, Sugar, Cotton and Fisheries Research and Development Corporations and the Department of Health and Ageing. The Program has developed more than 30 publications to help farmers, fisherman and their families, identify workplace risks and develop ways to mitigate them.

Farming and fishing are among Australia’s most high-risk industries. Research carried out by the Australian Centre for Agriculture Health and Safety (ACAHS) during 2007, revealed 60 per cent of deaths on Australian farms were work related. However, during the past decade on-farm work related deaths have decreased by more than 33 per cent — from 150 deaths to less than 100.

Anecdotal information from the fishing industry indicates commercial fishing operators have also made significant improvements in work place safety. Partners of the Farming and Fishing Health and Safety project, are urging farmers and fisherman to not be complacent when it comes to the wellbeing of themselves, their workers and their families.
