The New Animal Products program covers about 40 animal species and includes industries that are relatively new (such as farmed rabbits and ostriches) and small industries that are more established (such as game birds and angora goats).
The RIRDC contribution is mainly from the Australian Government core funding with support of levies from the kangaroo, buffalo and deer industries. A statutory levy is in place for kangaroo harvested for human and pet consumption, raising about $80,000 per annum. The core funding in the program is currently at 32 per cent, with industry contributing 30 per cent and research agencies 38 per cent.
The program aims to accelerate the development of viable new animal industries.
