RIRDC Projects and Results

Project Details

Name

Green tea profitability and environmental assurance

Summary

This project will build upon the results of the recently completed RIRDC green tea project (DAN-227A) to optimise management factors to produce quality Japanese style green tea (Camellia sinensis var. sinensis). This project will have the following objectives: (1) Refine integrated pest and disease management (IPDM), including field pathogen survey and desk-top study to investigate the potential of minor use permits, (2) Achieve high yield and quality green tea whilst caring for the environment particularly in relation to nitrogen nutrition, (3) Examine opportunities to maintain and extend the quality of the freshly-harvested leaves of Japanese green tea, determine green tea quality and investigate alternate uses of tea components, (4) Establish and facilitate a technical steering committee to develop a national approcach to green tea research and development (this may later incorporate broader industry development and economics). Facilitate broad industry communication through second Australian green tea conference.
