In April 2009, an inaugural meeting of NRIA determined that an alliance of new and emerging agricultural industries with common interests is needed to maximise the economic benefits Australia gains from such industries and to encourage the development of new industries;
In December 2009, a part time manager was recruited to further the establishment of NRIA, develop a strategy for membership and governance, and seek alternative funding mechanisms to support the ongoing efforts of the Secretariat.
Over the next year, mechanisms will be developed to enhance the exchange of information and provide a forum for improving cooperation, coordination and education.

- The development and implementation of the NRIA website and NRIA magazine and brochures to encourage membership and NRIA objectives
- An expo and conference that facilitate awareness of new industries and their contribution Australian agriculture, as well as builds the capacity of people involved in new industries
- Increased membership that includes members from the entire value chain
- The development and implementation of an innovative strategy to promote partnerships with traditional owners
- The facilitation of other Government agencies and private sector funding to support NRIA activities
