Key Strategies for 2005-06

Maintaining Profitability - Identify ways of maintaining profitability of rangelands use while assuring that production techniques are sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Establishment of Trials - Establish trials of sustainable wildlife enterprises such as commercial utilisation of free-ranging wild animals, plants and wildlife- based tourism as agents of biodiversity conservation and landscape rehabilitation.

Enable Information Sharing - Enabling sharing of experiences and opportunities for collaboration between trials and related programs.

Develop Marketing Strategies - Developing marketing strategies for produce from enterprises that lead to a net conservation gain and integrate performance management frameworks such as EMS.

Seek Investment - Seeking private sector investors in the trials project, both philanthropic and dividend led.

Expected Key Outputs for 2005-06
  • Establishment of Wildlife Management Conservancies (WMC's) near Mitchell and Wentworth
  • Identification of enterprise options and potential support to develop the WMC's component projects.
  • Schedules and costs for conservation works, habitat improvement and wildlife threat reduction.
  • Sustainable harvest rates in WMC for species being utilised.
Expected Key Outcomes for 2005-06
  • Initiation of coordination of property scale wildlife management plans through establishment of Wildlife Management Conservancies at Mildura and Mitchell (Qld).
  • Recruiting a WMC coordinator/ support staff and establishing, or obtaining an office at both trial sites.
  • Sharing of information and experiences during the conduct of the trials.
  • Enhanced capacity of land managers to effectively and efficiently plan, monitor and integrate NRM plans.
  • Integration of conventional agriculture production, tourism and sustainable commercial use of wildlife.
