Key Strategies for 2006-07

Continue Trials - that seek evidence of the conservation value of sustainable wildlife enterprises and test the notion that commercial value is an incentive for restoring habitats, reclaiming degraded areas, maintaining landscapes and encouraging biodiversity conservation.

Identify Oppurtunities for Collaboration - with other rural research corporations and other research agencies which have a continuing priority to support the development of alternative production systems and options for reinventing Australian agriculture. Draw on multisectoral and international collaboration.

Assess Taxation Incentives - assess effectiveness of taxation incentives that encourage reassignment of land from use in less sustainable production practices to conservation purposes, and programs providing ecosystems services and stewardship payments

Expected Key Outputs for 2006-07
  • Establishment of financial and strategic partnerships with existing wildlife resource industries, government support programs and philanthropic conservation organisation to underpin the WMC's.
  • Trials of use of new technology to trace wildlife products and maintain high quality.
  • Review of South African wildlife auction system and ownership issues.
  • Promotion of the opportunities in SWE through journals such as Australian Farm.
  • Identification of barriers and stimuli for policy design for conservation through sustainable use and a review options for property rights, resource ownership and tenure, tradable quotas, as they apply to the sustainable wildlife enterprise trials. 
  • Identification of opportunities for tourism on agricultural land through mammal reintroductions.
Expected Key Outcomes for 2006-07
  • Improved research and evaluation in support of WMCs ecological, economic and sociological monitoring to enhance sustainability and to enhance biodiversity, rural prosperity and social wellbeing.
  • Development of successful collaborative decision making frameworks (Wildlife Management Conservancies) to progress sustainable wildlife enterprises and landholders aspirations.
  • Establishment of financial and strategic partnerships and marketing opportunities for Sustainable Wildlife Enterprises in the WMCs.
