Pursuant to subsection 141(1) of the Primary Industries Research and Development Act 1989, I have pleasure in submitting to you the Annual Report of the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation Selection Committee for the year ending 2001–02 .
The work of the Selection Committee has now been completed and the appointments to the Board announced.
I have formally abolished the RIRDC Selection Committee, pursuant to Section 129 of the Act.

ANNUAL REPORT - BOARD APPOINTMENTS
The period of appointment for the non-executive Board members of RIRDC expired on the 30 June 2002.
The Parliamentary Secretary, Senator the Hon. Judith Troeth, appointed Ms Jenny Varcoe-Cocks as Presiding Member to take effect from the 1 January 2002.
Selection Committee
Nominations were sought from representative organisations for appointments to the Selection Committee. The Minister appointed the following people to the Committee in February 2002:
Mr Jeff Fairbrother Executive Director, Australian Chicken Meat Federation and Australian Poultry Industries Association Mr Jeff Ironside President, Australian Egg Industry Association Ms Ruth Robinson Nominee, National Farmers’ Federation Mr Norm McAllister Nominee, National Farmers’ Federation Selection Process
The Committee agreed in principle on the core criteria required of Board members, which included demonstrated capability and experience, ideally in the following fields:
The advertising strategy ensured that the appointments were made public through the media Australia wide, and also through the department website. Existing Board members were encouraged to apply. Commodity production, processing or marketing Conservation of natural resources Management of natural resources Science Technology and technology transfer Environmental and ecological matters Economics Evaluation and administration of R&D Finance, including the evaluation of R&D projects Business management The Selection Committee agreed on the balance of skills, and personal attributes required, and also confirmed that candidates as individuals should demonstrate a capability to bring holistic judgements and wide ranging experience to the Board.
The advertisements attracted strong interest throughout the nation. The process included networking and consultation with affiliated organisations. Private and government databanks were also accessed through relevant agencies.
Candidates were selected for interview from the advertisement and from an extensive search process. Interviews were conducted in Melbourne and Sydney, with candidates from most States of Australia.
The Selection Committee interviewed Board members who nominated for re-election.
The Presiding Member conferred with the Chairperson for her views on the future strategic direction of RIRDC, and the appropriate mix of skills and experience required of the Board.
Board Appointments
The Selection Committee conferred on the choice of recommended candidates. Mention should be made that the decisions were complex, due to the high quality of professional experience and the strong personal attributes of candidates. The Committee made its final decisions, taking into account the balance and range of attributes required and the need for diversity across the rural, commercial, research, financial, environmental, and production sectors.
Recommendations were made to the Minister in April 2002. The Parliamentary Secretary appointed the following Directors in June 2002.
Professor Robert Clark Nominated for a second term. Director of the Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research. Professor Clark has an excellent understanding of Australia’s rural industries and wider agricultural issues, and will continue to provide specialist scientific advice to the Board Ms Helen Cameron Nominated for a second term. Director of a number of State and Federal boards, publicly listed companies and charities. She has a sound understanding of RIRDC initiatives as well as extensive experience in finance and commodity production Dr Mike Taverner Technical consultant in the area of rural industry research, with a strong background in public and private sector R&D. And, as Chairman of the Egg and Chicken Meat Advisory Boards for RIRDC, Dr Taverner has a strong scientific background and a good understanding of corporate governance matters Mr Steve Marshall Consultant with a background in science and international food processing. He has also held a number of senior managerial roles, here and overseas, and has extensive experience in the areas of food technology and production Mr Robert Boshammer Successful agricultural producer from northern Western Australia. He brings to the Board great initiative, drive and an innovative, creative approach to business Mr Barry Buffier Consultant with a long and distinguished career in the financial sector, specialising in rural agribusiness. He brings extensive economic and scientific experience to the Board, and will also be able to provide expert advice and guidance on a range of rural sector matters
