The evaluation and adoption
of new technologies by Australian industry is critical to their
continued development. The Corporation requires that the extension
phase be considered in all individual projects and programs.
Additionally, the Corporation believes a specialist program in
extension and technology transfer is warranted.
Extension as we have known it is changing. Its operating
environment is changing and the needs of our stakeholders in rural
industries are changing.
The cost and relevance of information systems have
also been a factor in farmer decision making and adoption of new
information technology. New generation equipment and processing
software may resolve some of the earlier problems with detail
and cost. Research groups within Australia and overseas have
also been progressively developing applications for agricultural
industries.
RIRDC's achievements in this program include the
establishment of `Vegetation Watch' a significant remote sensing
project which is monitoring the growth of vegetation across the
state and is helping land managers maximise benefits and minimise
losses of their crops and livestock through better forecasting
of the effects of seasons, cyclones, storms, droughts, fires,
etc.
RIRDC is also supporting the development of Farm
Management 500, an innovative new extension model which brings
together the resources of farmers, farm management consultants
and agribusiness to accelerate adoption of farm business management.
