Societies, including the
primary industries, are characterised by ongoing pressures leading
to economic and social changes. The economic and social well-being
of all Australians, either directly or indirectly, are affected
by the way that the primary industries and persons associated
with those industries respond to the pressures.
Both the public and private sectors provide considerable
resources to assist in the structural adjustment processes in
the primary industries through, for instance, education and training,
research and development and targeted schemes such as the Rural
Adjustment Scheme. It is important that these resources are utilised
effectively and efficiently.
This small RIRDC program provides independent research
support for operational and policy analysis within the industry
and the Primary Industries and Energy portfolio.
One of RIRDC's highlights on this program was the completion of a very topical study into family farm transfer, which is a key issue for most farm families and their accounting, legal and farm management advisers. Strategies developed by researchers during their three years of work with mixed farming families were drawn together into a national action plan.
