Poisoning by plants is a serious concern to those who own or care for horses. A new guide detailing the identification, management, and avoidance of potentially harmful plants, as well as the diagnosis and treatments for poisoning, will be an essential reference for vets, trainers, and owners.
Published by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), Plants Poisonous to Horses – An Australian Field guide was launched today at the 2006 Australian Equine Science Symposium, as part of the Magic Millions events at Surfers Paradise on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
A poster giving summary information on several of the most common plants that endanger horse health accompanies the book.
Launching the book, RIRDC Chair Mary Boydell said that RIRDC’s Horse Research and Development Program has funded more than 130 projects nationwide since 1995, investing more than $6 million in innovation and cutting-edge research for the horse industry.
The innovative result of one RIRDC project, a hi-tech horse fitness monitoring system called “E trakka”, was a recent finalist in popular ABC TV show The New Inventors.
“The high demand for the numerous horse publications and information the horse program has produced reflects the strong culture of innovation in our horse research sector, and the enthusiasm for new ideas,” Mrs Boydell said.
“This book and poster – the only currently available reference publication suitable for both the layman and the more technical specialists – is another example of RIRDC working with the horse industry to deliver real benefits to all involved.”
“RIRDC plays an important role in providing research and development for selected established rural industries, including the horse industry,” RIRDC Managing Director Dr Peter O'Brien said.
“These resources will be of great value to everyone involved in the horse industry; to the multi-million-dollar thoroughbred and racing industries, to the farmers and graziers for whom horses are an integral part of their daily business; and to the thriving community of recreational riders and horse owners.”
Plants Poisonous to Horses – An Australian field guide is available from the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation for $30 (poster included – additional copies of the poster $7 each).
