Forum to discuss bioenergy and emission trading
Tuesday, 24 June 2008Scientists and key players in the bioenergy industry will gather in Canberra this Thursday to discuss the implications for forestry, agriculture and bioenergy of an emission trading scheme (ETS).
“Bioenergy and its Role in Emission Trading” will be the theme of the next meeting of Bioenergy Australia, a government-industry forum established to foster the development of biomass for energy, fuel and other value added bio-based products.
Bioenergy Australia consists of more than 65 companies, government departments and research institutions and is managed by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC).
The forum will consider the current opportunities and challenges for bioenergy, forestry and agriculture in the soon-to-be-established emission trading environment.
It will include discussions about the role of bioenergy in an ETS, the impact of carbon offset markets, carbon mitigation and large-scale tree planting, and the role of agriculture and biofuels.
RIRDC General Manager of New Industries and Chair of Bioenergy Australia, Dr Roslyn Prinsley, said the forum would develop current thinking about the role of forestry and agriculture in tackling climate change and generate ideas for policy makers.“Bioenergy Australia is the leading forum for the development of bioenergy options in this country.
“Thursday’s meeting will be an opportunity to discuss the role that forestry and agriculture may play in the climate change equation, the opportunities and threats for farmers and landholders and the impact emission trading may have on the development of bioenergy and biofuels,” Dr Prinsley said.
The meeting will be held at CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems in Bellenden Street, Crace, from 10 am to 4pm on Thursday 26 June.
