New scheme for industry group training or extension activities and application form
Amino acid and energy requirements of imported brown layer strains
New scheme for industry group
training or extension activitiesThe RIRDC Egg Program is offering financial assistance for a wide range of group training or extension activities for the Australian egg industry.
The overall aim of this scheme is to improve the technical efficiency of the industry by improving the skills and knowledge base and increasing the uptake of new technology.
Under this scheme, members of the egg industry or related professional groups, such as industry veterinarians or nutritionists, with common interests or problems can get together and apply for funding to help them undertake a training or extension activity. The activity will therefore be tailored to address the group’s specific needs and can be held at a time and place that suits the group. Some examples of appropriate activities would be field days, seminars, workshops or practical demonstrations. Any activity that fits within the overall aim will be considered.
Some assistance may be available in organising the activities, for example in identifying experts to speak on certain topics, but it is expected that the majority of the organisation, such as setting dates, arranging facilities and catering, communicating with participants, etc, will be managed by the group.
Funding will be on a competitive basis. There will be four deadlines for applications each year:
Deadlines for activities to take place in the following:
End January April-June End April July-September End July October-December End October January-March The scheme will start this year with applications due by the end of April for activities to take place in July-September.
Group sizes can vary but the value of an activity, and therefore its likelihood of being funded, will increase with the more people that participate.
A total of $5000 will be available in each quarter. Applications will be judged on the basis of the value of the activity relative to the cost and the likelihood of the activity being successful. Applications unsuccessful in one round may be resubmitted in another round. You can apply online using the form below:

of imported brown layer strainsThe high mortality problem due to Marek’s disease when imported brown layer strains were first used widely in Australia made it difficult to assess the suitability of overseas recommendations for nutrient requirements when these birds were managed under Australian conditions. The control of the Marek’s disease problem has now allowed the nutrient requirements of these hens under Australian conditions to be accurately assessed.
Professor Derick Balnave, from the University of Sydney, and Mr David Robinson, from the Queensland Poultry Research and Development Centre, have recently investigated the use of a prelay diet and energy, protein and amino acid requirements of IsaBrown hens.
These studies showed that the IsaBrown hen has a limited ability to adjust her feed intake when given diets with different energy levels. The effect of using a prelayer diet with 2 g calcium/kg from 15 to 18 weeks of age was tested and found to give no benefit. The results supported the breeder recommendations of 11.4 MJ of ME/kg, 19.5 g crude protein and 430 mg methionine/day but found that the recommended lysine level of 880 mg/day was not enough to support optimum hen housed production
