International Protea Conference Maui, USA - Travel Report presented to RIRDC by Christopher Dunne
July 2002 RIRDC Publication No W02/018 RIRDC Project No TA012-20
The following gives an overview of my attendance at the International Protea Association (IPA) conference. It highlights the purpose and benefits of my attendance. I gave two seminars, which have also been written as journal articles, which are now in review. Copies of these articles are attached.
Travel itinerary:
Departed Perth 7th March to Honolulu via Sydney
Transferred 8th March from Oahu to Maui
Conference 9th to 4th March
Departed Maui 17th March
Departed Honolulu 21st March to Perth via Sydney
Primary purpose:
The primary purpose was to attend the IPA conference in Maui in order
to present two seminars on findings from my PhD, to learn more about what
is happening Internationally in Protea research, and to make valuable contacts.
Major achievements/findings:
The major achievement was to present the two seminars that describe
aspects of my PhD research on controlling diseases of commercial proteas
in Australia. My seminar papers were very well received and I had numerous
discussions with delegates for the duration of the conference. As a result
of these seminars the International Protea Association has asked me to
write a short non-scientific article on my work for Protea producers. Whilst
at the conference I had the opportunity to gain information on production,
disease management and marketing of Proteas that I will pass onto local
growers over time. Also, the conference gave me the opportunity to interact
with other researchers working internationally on Protea production and
disease management.
Benefits/significance:
In attending the conference I had the opportunity to present some of my findings of my Ph.D. to an international group of key industry and research associates. I have also submitted two papers for review that will be published in the ISHS journal Acta Horticulture in 2002. The conference was also of benefit as I was able to gather the latest information on Protea production and disease control which has relevance to my own work and for growers in Australia.
The major benefits to the rural industry in my attendance at the conference were to be a representative of the Western Australia (WA) growers and to be able to emphasize the local issues. I gained important information about (a) the propagation of Leucadendron spp., (b) the management of diseases and (c) made important international contacts. I will distribute this knowledge informally to local growers through a newsletter produced by the Department of Agriculture, and at the next field day at my experimental site.
Recommendations to RIRDC & industry:
No recommendations necessary.
Suggested dissemination of information:
I will write an article for the Floriculture newsletter published by
the Department of Agriculture. This newsletter is widely distributed to
many wildflower growers and industry representatives in WA. The newsletter
is also widely available through the Department of Agriculture’s website.
This newsletter is likely to be published mid 2002.
