Rice

Program Overview

Overview

The aim of the Rural Industries R&D Corporation’s Rice Program is to improve the profitability and sustainability of the Australian rice industry through the organisation, funding and management of a RD&E program that is both market and stakeholder driven.

The Australian rice industry is a world leader in production efficiency, water use efficiency and environmental management. Its high quality export focussed production achieves premium prices in world medium grain rice markets. This status is directly attributable to RD&E.

This program is funded by statutory levies paid by industry participants which are matched on a dollar for dollar basis by the Australian Government.

Research investments are guided by the Rice R&D Advisory Committee following the Rice 2012 - 2017 R&D Plan.

Program Aim

To improve the productivity and sustainability of the Australian rice industry through the organisation, funding and management of a research, development and extension program that is aligned with industry reality and stakeholder needs.

R&D Plan

The Rice Industry R&D Plan 2012-2017 builds on the Rural Industries R&D Corporation’s previous five-year investment programs.

A significant share of the research, development and extension that underpins the rice industry success has been managed by the Rural Industries R&D Corporation through a continuous series of Five Year R&D plans since 1991.

The current Rice Program Five Year R&D Plan addresses the new industry realities and builds on past program success. The Program retains its strong emphasis on rice variety breeding to further reduce demand for irrigation water and adapt to a climate that is hotter, drier and more variable.

The Plan identifies six key objectives for the RD&E investment to be made on behalf of the rice industry and Australian Government. Associated with each objective is a set of strategies to be followed in pursuing each objective and a set of performance indicators to give guidance as to how the program can be assessed as it progresses. An indicative share of RD&E budget has also been proposed for each plan objective in order to guide investment priorities.

The Australian rice industry is strongly supportive of the RD&E program and its management by the Rural Industries R&D Corporation.
